It’s hard to believe more than 20 years have passed since the reliably superb Adrien Brody won his Best Lead Actor Oscar at the Academy Awards. Film buffs will recall it was for his spellbinding turn in criminal director Roman Polanski’s masterpiece The Pianist as Władysław Szpilman, a talented performer at the keys who also happened to be a Jew in Poland during World War II. Decades later, Brody continues to take Hollywood by storm with another leading role tied to the trauma of WWII, this time playing a Hungarian refugee named László Tóth starting anew in the U.S. during the post-war era. Over the epic 215-minute runtime of The Brutalist, László tries to utilize his masterful architectural skills to make a name for himself in the States.
