Universal Pictures will release two of its biggest animated film franchises in 2026, as Minions 3 has been bumped up from 2027, which has delayed Shrek 5 back to a December release. When Shrek 5 was announced to arrive in theaters in the summer of 2026, fans were over the moon. Following the critical and box office success of Puss in Boots and the generational nostalgia for the Shrek franchise, timing Shrek 5 for the franchise’s 25th anniversary seemed like a perfect play. The studio gave the DreamWorks Animation film the prime Fourth of July weekend window that Universal has previously used to great success with Illumination’s Despicable Me and Minions franchise.
