Many directors’ films end up with multiple versions as a result of studio intervention, international re-cuts, or re-released director’s cuts. Ridley Scott is certainly one of those filmmakers, having created different director’s cuts for 10 movies throughout his career — Robin Hood, Alien, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster, The Martian, Gladiator, The Counselor, Legend, Kingdom of Heaven, and, perhaps most controversially, his sci-fi masterpiece, 1982’s Blade Runner. The 1992 re-edit of the film is, despite some controversy, widely considered to be one of the greatest director’s cuts of all time, eliminating certain things (voiceover, a happy ending) and inserting others (the unicorn dream) in order to create more metaphysical mystery and ambiguity.
